#2 Birthday!

Hey Ya-All.
Well, today was Izona's second Birthday.
Captains trip log: Trip # 37 11/05/2006
224.7 Hours on the meter. Overcast and calm
weather.
Hard to believe it's been two years. We want to
thank all our Family and Friends for all the
support over the past 2 years. Been some bumps in
the road, but the good times outweigh the bad by
far! What a great day we had today.
Again, special thanks to - Kann Manufacturing
Mercury Marine Dave's Marine
Blue Heron's Nest The Towboat Gallery
And too many more to list! We have met some
extraordinary people who have touched our lives.
From Authors to Towboat Captains. Commercial
Skippers, to Pleasure Boaters from all around the
world.
We photographed a couple of Towboats today to add
to our collection, and watched as they passed us
by like gentle giants.
A trip to "Big Island" was long over due, so we
headed south to check in with the duck hunters.
After a short visit it was time to turn upbound
and think about putting Izona back on her trailer.
Well, we now have 231.2 hours on the meter, and
Izona is asleep on her trailer in the shop, but
has a new friend! Yes, we have an addition to the
fleet. A 20' Monark Jon Boat, to be named:
"FAMILY TRADITION"
I know what your thinking, why does he need
another boat? Well, the answer is really quite
simple:
"One boat is too many, and a hundred ain't
enough!"
I'll talk to you all later. Stay in touch. Thank-
You all!
Tim, Lori & Miss Lucky!

TRIP #29

Izona Trip Log Trip #29 08/24/06
It was 07:35 when we launched at Fort Madison,
IA. Harbor. The weather was clear, cool and calm,
for the time being. We pointed Izona southbound
and away we went. As we passed by Hall Towing
everybody was working away, but all took the time
to give us a shout on the VHF.
Traveling on down to lock 19, Keokuk, IA. we
were allowed to enter the lock chamber with a
Corp's boat who was hard at work. After another
pleasurable experience locking through, we
continued on south. Found the "Kangaroo" tied in
behind some barges, a boat I worked on some 35
years ago!
Our journey took us all the way down to the lock
and dam 20, where we turned back upbound. This
would be the half way point of our trip.
 While overtaking the Northbound towboat,
American Beauty, we noticed she was pulling a net.
Never seen anything like that before. Finding out
later it's a Government study of how many fish are
disturbed by barge traffic. Our tax dollars at
work?
We took lots of pictures around the Keokuk area,
and again locked through #19 upbound. After
exiting the lock we headed straight for the Keokuk
Yacht Club so Miss Lucky could go ashore and
stretch her legs. We visited with a few of the
local Folks and were told the wind had came up and
the "big water" at Montrose had 3' rollers.
The waves were not even noticeable in the Kann
Built Izona, we rolled along over the top of the
waves at 8 knots with hardly any spray! Every now
and then I'd let her bow down a bit and let a wave
roll over the nose just for fun, but then back on
top!
We returned to the marina to load Izona at 18:30
with another 9.8 hours on the hour meter, and
another wonderful trip to dream about!
Happy Boating & Sailing!
Tim, Lori & "Miss Lucky" Powell

Trip to the Illinois River!

Lori Powell's Captains Log - August 10, 2006
We departed West Burlington, IA. at 06:00
in "Big Red" with Izona on her trailer. Our
destination, Detweiler Marina, Peoria Illinois.
It is 100 miles and a 2 hour drive to Peoria
from home and well worth the trip. What a great
time.
When we arrived at the Marina (08:00) Miss Lucky
checked out the Harbor Ducks while Lori & I
launched Izona. Great ramps. After parking the
truck we all got on board and motored out into the
channel. Illinois River, here we come!
There is a lot to see in the Peoria area, and
lots of boats to photograph! We headed downbound
under the I-74 Hwy. bridge and continued our trip
all the way to the lock and dam right below the I-
474 by-pass. That's where we turned and started
upbound.
We talked with several of the local harbor
towboats, who were all asking questions about
Izona. We also took lots of pictures. OH, by the
way, we saw a sign that said "Hooters" delivers to
the lock and dam. Lori took my mobile phone and
turned it off?
Traveling on North we spotted Hamm's Holiday
Harbor Marina. What an interesting place to take
pictures! Lots of old towboats, a couple of stern
wheelers, and lots of houseboats.
Departing the marina and again heading north we
were all startled by a loud crash! I was at the
helm, and thought I hit a log? Wrong! After it
happened again, Lori looked towards the back of
the boat, let out a scream and said "look at the
size of that fish"! One had landed on the engine
cover. We later found out the Illinois River is
infested with Asian Carp. Also called Big Head or
Silver Carp. They jump out of the water when a
boat passes by, sometimes hitting the boat! Glad
we have a cabin.
We continued on north, trying to avoid
the "killer carp" and pulled into the marina at
Lacon Illinois. Time to take Miss Lucky ashore.
After boarding and departing the marina we
decided to start back. We had come a long way, but
what a ride! We settled in for a nice trip south.
It was 18:30 when we arrived at our launching
point. Where did the day go? Izona of course
loaded easily on her trailer. Miss Lucky again had
to check out the harbor ducks, and we started our
trip home in "Big Red."
We had put 10.2 hours on the hour meter in
Izona, but it felt like an hour tops! Well, that's
our little story for now, but it's not over! Ever!
The crew, Tim Lori & Miss Lucky!

Just Checking In!

Hello Izona River Families.
We went for a boat ride 7/16/06 and what a day!
The Mississippi Queen was in town, along with
numerous line haul towboats moving freight up and
down the river. We enjoyed talking with
the "Skippers" who all ask the same question about
Izona. Where did she come from? As you all know,
Kann Mfg.
By the way, the "Boys" at Kann are turning out
new boats every month! Made to order, for hard
work and play!
I also want to say Hello to Kathy, the "Old
River Rat" in her new home along the river in
Illinois. How ya comming on your news letter?
Gotta go for now. Drop me a line.

Happy New Year!

Well, the ice is out of the Mississippi River in
Burlington IA. but it was a cold and rainy day, so
we let Izona sleep. I'm sure Lori and Miss Lucky
would have braved the weather, as once aboard we
would have been warm and dry. The thought of
getting ready to go trucking tomorrow just sort of
took the wind out of my sails.
Looking forward to spring, and warm towboating
weather. Here's hoping we all have our wheels in
deep water very soon!

1 Year Birthday/Anniversury

To Our Family & Friends!
To Family, Friends, old and new, let me tell you
a little story! On November 5, 2004 @ 11:30am we
launched the "Izona" for the first ever in
Guttenburg, IA. Lori, Miss Lucky, the "Crew" from
Kann Mfg. and Myself left the dock on a sunny day
for a ride in a dream machine!
The Izona dream was kept alive by the steadfast
determination of my Wife! Although the road to
Guttenburg was bumpy, Randy Heller and his crew
made the rest of the ride a breeze! No problem
he'd say! And there was not.
 Yesterday, November 5, 2005 @ 09:15 we launched
Izona in Fort Madison, IA. We would start our trip
log at voyage #23, with 132.5 hours on the hour
meter. It was partly cloudy and cool outside, but
with the cabin doors closed it was nice and warm
inside. Never even turned on the heater-----but we
could have!
We started downbound and visited with our
friends at Hall Towing, who were unloading barges
with a giant crane. They offered me a job welding
on the bottom of a barge they were lifting out of
the river, but I declined their offer and
continued on down the river.
We saw five different Towboats in all. Some
working, some moored, but all were sad they
weren't as pretty as Izona. (You have to speak
boat talk.) We went down to lock 19 and talked to
the Lockmaster for a bit, and turned upbound and
started back.
We had a relaxing day as always. Izona's Merc
Cruiser purrs like a kitten, and she almost pilots
herself. We just ride along and look out the
windows at the beautiful scenery along the river.
We returned to the harbor in Ft. Madison at about
14:30pm with 137.6 hours on the meter. I guess the
only sad part of the day is putting Izona back on
her trailer. OH yeah, and Lori had left the cell
phone in the glove compartment of the truck.Don't
tell Rex!
With Miss Lucky asleep in the back seat, and
Lori and I so relaxed we could hardly speak, it
was a quiet ride home in "Big Red."
Well, that's all for now, but thank you all for
your kind words, complements and encouragement!
Remember, keep your wheels in deep water!
Tim, Lori & Lucky! "Izona", built 2004

The Catfish's Story!

"I'm going on a river trip," said the Catfish to
his Friend.
"I'll swim this Mighty River, from it's beginning
until the end."
"From the top of Lake Itaska, to the Gulf way down
below,
the Mississippi will provide for me, a gentle way
to go."
"There will be no time for postcards, or letters
to write and send."
"Only the trill of a new adventure, waiting around
the bend!"

"When you have finished, with your great trip,
and your journey is at it's end." "Whatever will
you do after that,"
asked the Catfish's curious Friend?

"Well, let me see," said the wise old fish, as he
answered with a grin.
"I guess I'll start all over, and I'll do it all
again!"

Just take a few moments when you look at these
words, go to your address book, and send a letter
to the person you have not talked to for the
longest time. They will be surprised, and you will
feel good.
You know, Life is like driving a loaded truck.
You can pull a heavy load over the mountains if
you shift to a lower gear! Slow down. Look around.
